I use Grandpa's farm map (you didn't mention which map you use) and I've gotten to his shrine way before the end of y2. Had to walk on the far side and follow the river up to the waterfall. There was a rock and a limb that I had to chop to access it to read the note. However, the diamond thing only works after day 1, y3 - after his evaluation.
