Former VW tech here (VWNA), the 2014 S came in one engine option the 2.0L (aka 2.0 slow). The 2.0 slow is well, slow and gutless but aside from that incredibly reliable. They used variations of the engine design from the 90's until 2015 when they replaced it with the 1.4l TSI. I believe they only make 120-130hp but for a reason.

It's literally the same block and head, and even the same intake design (different material) that has been used on ever 8 valve NA engine since the 2nd generation. The 2019+ GLI has the same powertrain/drivetrain as the GTI now but the new generation VW interior. This mainly means you get the fully digital gauges on the autobahn trim, a more modern infotainment and ventilated seats on the autobahn trim. However the GTI is still the only one you can get with adaptive cruise control.The reliability you see on CR is for the Jetta as a whole and not just the GLI. The GLI has a different engine and platform. It is more reliable. Go ahead and buy one. They are great vehicles. They will be reliable at the very least for your 5 year financing period. Keep up with the recommended maintenance.
