Appearance. This chubby-looking fish has a round, stout body and large eyes. Not the fastest swimmer, it propels through the water with its fanlike pectoral fins and broom-shaped caudal fin. It also has no scales — its skin is leathery and bumpy. One aquarist describes lumpfish skin as "feeling like old, mold-crusted Jell-O".
Kelp forests grow quickly — about three to five inches each day in our exhibit, and about 10 to 12 inches in the Monterey Bay.
