Yes doing it solo increases your chances of getting an exotic and is the best way to get the exotic. You can still earn an exotic from that lost sector if you have a fireteam with you but that's rare. I've had a legendary lost sector drop an exotic in 3 different occasion and it's happened with my friends too.
