Yes doing it solo increases your chances of getting an exotic and is the best way to get the exotic. You can still earn an exotic from that lost sector if you have a fireteam with you but that's rare. I've had a legendary lost sector drop an exotic in 3 different occasion and it's happened with my friends too.
Drops in lost sector appear to prioritize exotics you haven't picked up yet. Once all are obtained, it is random. I'd put drop rate at about 1 exotic per 4 to 6 runs on average from running a bunch if legendary difficulty last night. Master should increase this so maybe 1 exo per 3 to 4 runs from what I saw in the past on another character.First drop "tends" to be the new one. With my warlock it worked at frist try (but i had nonother exotics to be found!). With my hunter, I dropped 3 other old helmets (that I didn't have so happy days!) first. I don't know what that dude was talking about. Drop rates on the lost sectors at both levels seems like it's way lower than last. Last season I could get an exotic drop every 4-5 runs. I played a master lost sector the other day. Attempted it for about 4 hours until I beat it. It was my first time being able to complete one of these and I was really excited about being able to maybe get dawn chorus to get nothing but 2000 glimmer. I tried it a second time. Still nothing. I feel cheated and my time has been wasted.

Thanks man. Someone did extensive testing on many lost sectors (literally several thousand total runs) and found a roughly 25% exotic drop rate for legend and 33% for master. They had several dry runs exceeding 30 lost sectors in a row with no exotic drop. So sometimes, you just get very unlucky.
